MORGANTON — Another night, another game, another blowout for the McDowell Lady Titans.
McDowell (5-0) led wire-to-wire in a 79-33 blowout of the Patton Panthers Friday. The Lady Titans have beaten their first five opponents by an average of 37 points.
Senior guard Autumn Ward had her typically splendid game with 15 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals.
Sophomore Tuccoa Brackett came off the bench to tally 15 points, seven rebounds, four steals and a block. And senior Xandi Gellman (4 rebounds, 2 steals) added 10. Point guard Jaalen Corpening had nine points and seven steals.
Good as the Lady Titans were offensively, they were even better on the other end. McDowell held Patton to 28 percent (11-of-40) shooting and forced 37 turnovers, with 29 of them coming on steals, which — more often that not — led to easy baskets for the Lady Titans.
Corpening's seven thefts led the way, while Ward, Kaitlin Gallion (6 points, 6 rebounds), Brackett and Mary Webb (3 points, 5 assists) collected four apiece. McDowell turned the ball over just 14 times and got 19 steals from its five starters alone.
"Our defensive intensity was good," said McDowell head coach Brian Franklin. "I thought our defense kind of forced the tempo on them and put the tempo into our favor."
That tempo — fast — helped the Lady Titans build a 22-11 lead after one quarter. McDowell outscored Patton 25-6 in the second quarter and held a 47-17 halftime lead.
Things got much worse for the Panthers when McDowell scored the first 24 points of the third quarter to go up 71-17. Seven different Lady Titans scored during the period, and Patton didn't get on the board until Fallon Benfield converted a conventional 3-point play with three seconds left in the quarter.
"I think we're starting to develop back into what we're used to," said Franklin. "I think our transition game is starting to get back where people are pitching ahead and everybody's running and getting involved. And then, when we don't have something (offensively), we're starting to show some patience, and I want to see more of that."
