MCA hoops squads sweep opponents

The Marion Christian Academy Knights began Blue Ridge Christian Conference play by breezing past Haywood Christian 67-20 last Friday.
Knights sophomore Brent Nichols led all scorers with 12 points, knocking down 4-of-5 3-pointers. Post Shaquille Symonette recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Christian McClendon added 11 points and pulled eight boards.
Brandon Marsh and Zach Cotter added eight points apiece. Johnny Wrenn had seven points, six assists, six rebounds and five steals. Cody Hughes (5 assists) chipped in four, as did Ryan Lewis, and Jordan McKinney scored two.
Marion improved to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in BRCC play.
Marion Christian 54, Tabernacle Christian 5 (varsity boys) — The Knights' usual rotation saw little action after the first quarter of a blowout win over Tabernacle.
All 13 Knights scored at least one basket. McClendon led the way with 12. Wrenn (5 steals, 4 assists) joined him in double figures with 10.
Matt Lytle (6 points), Freddie Collins (5), Symonette (4), Ethan Benedict (3), Cotter (2), Hughes (2), Nichols (2), Lewis (2), Marsh (2), Andrew Boone (2) and McKinney (2) also contributed. Boone also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Marion Christian 59, Haywood Christian 21 (varsity girls) — The Lady Knights got huge games from post players Haley Broadwell and Jordan Guice en route to a 59-21 victory in the BRCC opener.
Broadwell scored a career-high 31 points and pulled 10 rebounds, while Guice posted career highs with 19 points and 16 boards as MCA improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Tiffany Watson (8 rebounds) added seven points and Kelsie Jones two. Kasey Conley didn't score but dished out 10 assists and pulled eight rebounds.
Marion Christian 54, Tabernacle 17 (varsity girls) — An 18-0 run early in the third quarter gave the Lady Knights all the momentum they needed in a win over Tabernacle.
Broadwell led the way with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Kelsey Webb added 11 points.
Guice scored nine and grabbed 10 boards. Conley (6 assists) scored eight, Lindsay Robinson two and Watson two.
Marion Christian 56, Haywood 20 (jayvee boys) — Orrie Johnson had 16 points and 10 rebounds as MCA cruised past Haywood.
Wesley Hensley (5 rebounds) tossed in 15 points for MCA (5-0, 1-0). Johnny Cooper (5 assists) and Sam Ward chipped in eight apiece.
Lowell Hobbs added four, while Tyler Sawyer (3 rebounds), Nate Laws and Jeremy Lewis added two apiece.
Marion Christian 56, Tabernacle 11 (jayvee boys) — Stephen Collins led all scorers with 17 points as the Knights coasted to an easy win.
Ward added nine points, Cooper eight and Hensley six.
Josh Lankford and Brandon Lam netted four apiece and Laws scored two.
