The McDowell Titans wrestling team dropped a 45-29 decision to the T.C. Roberson Rams Tuesday in the Mountain Athletic Conference opener.
The Titans (1-5 overall, 0-1 MAC) were competitive throughout, but couldn't get over the hump against the Rams.
"Although we lost, I thought this was the best the kids wrestled all year," said McDowell head coach Steve Leight. "I'm really encouraged by the progress we're making. Though we are not a good dual meet team at this point, we are improving and we'll be there soon I believe."
Several Titans had big nights, including senior Jacob Hensley (152 pounds) who won by technical fall and improved his record to 17-3. Corbin Hester (160) pinned his opponent. And Nathan Marsh (171) beat his fifth state-ranked wrestler of the season and moved to 16-3 individually.
Sophomores Tyler Radford (189) and Patrick Lee (112) also won. Leight said the Titans' four freshmen wrestled better than the 1-3 mark they posted.
McDowell is at the Ashbrook tournament this weekend.
