Gunny salutes community's response to Toys for Tots

Despite a bad economy, the local Toys for Tots campaign had the most successful year ever in 2009.
Gunnery Sgt. Scott Price, who is U.S. Marine Corps' coordinator for the local Toys for Tots campaign, reported that the effort collected around 3,000 toys total and supported many families in McDowell County who were in difficult financial situations.
That is better than last year, when the local chapter of Toys for Tots collected around 1,900 toys.
Price said he wanted to thank the sponsors who helped make it possible. They are North Carolina Outreach Home Care LLC, Jim Cook Chevrolet, Joanne Howle Realty, Bruce's Fabulous Foods, McDowell High School, Carolina First Bank and Dollar General in Old Fort.
The distributions points were located at Grace Community Church, for the western side of McDowell, and Yancey Street Baptist Church, for the eastern side. A few other locations that received toys were the McDowell Mission Ministries and the McDowell County Department of Social Services.
Price said he also wants to thank McDowell High Principal Ben Talbert for his support in this program throughout the last few months. In addition, computer technician David Gartner and his motivated students at McDowell High "went above and beyond to ensure they met the needs of the McDowell County families."
"I feel this partnership with the students at McDowell High is a sign of bigger and better campaigns in the future," said Price. "I hope each of our sponsors, distributors and families had a very merry Christmas."
