ASHEVILLE — The McDowell Titans junior varsity football team concluded its 2009 campaign Thursday night on a high note, picking up a convincing 42-28 victory at Enka.
McDowell (2-7 overall, 2-4 Mountain Athletic Conference) put together its best effort of the season on both sides of the ball. The Titans accumulated 332 yards of total offense.
Jared Helms had a breakout performance at tailback with 159 yards rushing on 24 carries. In turn, Helms' success opened up the McDowell passing attack.
Zach Martin had his best game of the season at quarterback. Martin, a sophomore who has played mostly linebacker recently, returned to signal caller and was effective, going 9-of-18 for 127 yards and four touchdowns.
Martin and receiver Josh Buckner (5 receptions, 54 yards, 4 TDs) connected on all four touchdown plays.
Martin scored a fifth time on the ground.
That, combined with three forced turnovers by the Titans defense, helped turn a close battle into a rout early in the second half.
Chris Carver scored a pair of touchdowns for Enka, including an 8-yard run with 5:17 left in the first half to give the Jets a 14-7 margin.
But from that point, McDowell took over, scoring 35 unanswered points.
The Titans took their first lead of the contest 18-14 with 1:18 left on a 29-yard halfback pass from Isaac Martin to Noah Dunham.
Then, after a muffed kickoff by Enka, McDowell wasted no time taking advantage. Buckner had a 9-yard touchdown catch with 28 seconds left to extend the Titans lead to 26-14.
Martin and Buckner connected on two more touchdown plays in the third quarter, including a 6-yard catch with 3:59 left to give McDowell a commanding 42-14 lead.
