The East McDowell Lady Trojans opened up the Foothills Conference volleyball tournament with a three-set rout (25-8, 25-2, 25-15) against Walter Johnson.
April Fulbright (8 assists, 4 digs) scored seven service points. Erin Mills (11 assists, 1 kill) added four service points. Leslie Rice led the Lady Trojans with 11 kills. Kassie Brackett added two kills. Taylor Bailey and Leslie Franklin had a kill each for East.
West McDowell 4, Table Rock 3 (girls soccer)
In soccer action, West McDowell picked up a pair of victories in the first round of the boys and girls tournaments.
The Lady Spartans advanced to the semifinals as they edged Table Rock 4-3 in sudden-death overtime. Courtney Austin and Megan Morris combined for two goals in the first half.
Table Rock drew even with a pair of scores during the second half. Austin netted a second goal during the first overtime to pull West ahead. But the Lady Falcons once again pulled even at 3-3 with a score late in overtime.
In sudden death, Ashley Rojas scored on the first try. Austin who defended the goal during the final stretch, made a save on the first Table Rock attempt to preserve the victory.
West McDowell 2, East McDowell 1 (boys soccer)
The West McDowell boys also picked up a 2-1 win against county rival East McDowell in the opening round.
The battles between these two teams have been fierce all season, with the two previous matches being decided by penalty kicks.
This time around it was the Spartans who were able to prevail in regulation. Luis Romero and Pablo Dominguez scored a goal each with assists from Jonathan Hurtado and Nathan Ledbetter.
