Leaky roof means longer wait at library

If you go to the library in Marion, you might have to wait a little longer to check out a book thanks to a leak in the building's ceiling.
On Wednesday, the McDowell County Public Library in Marion was closed for the Veterans Day holiday. All day, the rain came as McDowell and the rest of the Southeast was drenched from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida.
The next day, library employees showed up for work and found that the inside of the building had suffered water damage from a leaky roof.
Library Director Jean Krause said the library's roof was scheduled for replacement but evidently the work wasn't done in time to prevent the damage. Workers were busy Thursday repairing the building's roof. Thursday had much better weather for a job of this kind.
The water damaged several ceiling tiles and one of the circulation computers.
"We think if (the computer) dries out, it might still work," said Krause. "But you don't know. You have to let it dry out for a couple of days."
With that computer down, it means longer lines for folks waiting to check out a book or a video. Krause said she is asking library patrons to be more patient.
The water also damaged some carpet. More than 10 ceiling tiles and some insulation will have to be replaced.
Krause said she doesn't yet have an estimate for the damage. The county's Maintenance Department came immediately to check out the problem.
