Hausley to attend ASU after all

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Former McDowell Titans basketball star Petey Hausley will play college ball at Appalachian State University after all, the university has announced.
Hausley, who originally signed with the Mountaineers out of high school, had to attend Iowa Western Community College because he had trouble making the necessary test scores. But, despite a coaching change at ASU, Hausley is one of four players who make up the school's next recruiting class.
"It doesn't surprise me at all (that Hausley signed with Appalachian)," said McDowell High head coach Lloyd Church. "Petey really loved Appalachian, and he is a stud right now."
The 6-6, 245-pound sophomore averaged 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds, and shot 60.7 percent from the field last season at Iowa Western. He was a second-team All-Region XI Conference selection as a freshman. He was the only post selected for either the first or second all-region teams.
In high school, he was a two-time Northwestern 4A Conference Player of the Year and an Associated Press All-State selection as a senior. He averaged 20.1 points and 9.4 rebounds and shot 65 percent from the floor in his senior campaign.
Hausley was originally recruited by former Mountaineers coach Houston Fancher, but new head coach Buzz Peterson wanted the former Titan just as badly. Church said the ASU coaches were impressed with Hausley, who has always played much taller than his listed height because of a long wingspan and good leaping ability.
"Their coaches were amazed at how strong he is," said Church. "He's the kind of player every coach wants. Everybody wants a rebounder, a shot-blocker and a competitor, and he's all of that. He's also the kind of player who got better against better competition."
