The McDowell Titans football team has forfeited its only victory of the season due to the use of an ineligible player.
The Titans were forced to give up their 26-6 Mountain Athletic Conference victory over the North Buncombe Blackhawks Oct. 2. McDowell's final record will go down as 0-11 overall and 0-6 in league play. North Buncombe officially finishes 2-9 overall and 1-5 in the conference. This was the first winless season in McDowell High history.
The Titans discovered the violation and reported it to the North Carolina State High School Athletic Association.
"I was as surprised as anybody, but we got to checking and found out he was ineligible," said McDowell athletic director Dennis "Flea" Blake. "We felt like we did the right thing by turning ourselves in. We notified the state (NCHSAA) and North Buncombe when we found out about it."
Blake said use of an ineligible player results in a $500 fine if someone other than the school reports it. When a school reports its own violation, the fine is $250.
The player, junior lineman Tre' Parks, moved here from Pennsylvania in late August. That state has a six-class system in high school as opposed to the four-class-per-semester system McDowell has. In order to be eligible for sports, MHS athletes must pass three of four subjects. Parks passed three subjects in Pennsylvania last year, but was still ineligible to play at McDowell.
The matter became further convoluted by the fact Parks attended several schools last year in Pennsylvania, Blake said.
