After a two-week long road trip, the McDowell Lady Titans volleyball team returned to the friendly confines of Titans Gym Tuesday night and took care of business, beating Erwin in four sets.
The win improves McDowell to 14-6 overall and 7-2 in the Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Lady Titans got strong service games from sophomore Tuccoa Brackett (8 aces, 13 kills, 4 solo blocks, 17 digs) and junior Mary Webb (4 aces, 25 digs). Using a strong serve, McDowell easily won the opening set 25-17.
Erwin responded to the early deficit in the second set by starting out strong, taking a 13-7 lead before the Lady Titans called a timeout. McDowell regrouped when play resumed and rallied to take the second set 25-22. The Lady Titans held the Lady Warriors to only nine points after the timeout.
Erwin was able to avoid a sweep by taking the third set 25-22.
But in the fourth, the Lady Titans went back to the same formula they used in the opening set and closed the match by beating the Lady Warriors 25-11 in the fourth.
"I thought we had a great floor game," said McDowell head coach Stephanie Pace. "Erwin is not as advanced as some of the others we have played recently. They don't set up offensively as quickly as the others we have played. We had to adjust to the speed of the game and we did a good job at that."
Hannah Lewis added seven kills and 22 digs. Megan Gouge (5 solo blocks, 4 block assists) tallied six kills. Taylor Settlemyre had five kills and 12 digs. Lauren Mills had two kills.
Tera Anderson, Taylor Proctor and Isabel Hillman all provided solid floor games, combining for 30 assists and 33 digs in the contest for McDowell.
The Lady Titans will host Asheville Thursday in the final home game of the regular season (5 p.m. start—jayvees, 6 p.m. start—varsity).
In junior varsity action, McDowell defeated Erwin 25-12 and 25-15.
Jessica Patrick had six kills and a solo block. Amber Fulbright (4 digs, 2 kills ) and Jordan Johnson (4 digs) combined for seven aces in the contest.
