All the hard work the McDowell Titans junior varsity football team has put out on the gridiron paid off last Thursday.
The Titans, led by Reshawn Chambers' two touchdowns, picked up their first win of the season, pitching a 14-0 shutout against Erwin.
With the victory McDowell (1-5 overall, 1-2 MAC) picked up their first ever win in Mountain Athletic Conference play.
Chambers finished with 78 yards rushing on 18 attempts.
The sophomore tailback got the Titans on the scoreboard 8-0 midway through the second quarter when he broke a couple tackles and sprinted 54 yards to pay dirt.
That lone score proved to be enough through three quarters of play as the Titans' defense made it tough on Erwin the entire game.
In the fourth quarter, McDowell put the Warriors to rest with a couple lengthy offensive drives, taking time off the clock.
The final scoring series involved a bit of trickery. With possession of the ball near midfield, Zach Martin took a lateral from quarterback Grant Robinson and tossed a 47-yard completion to Noah Dunham to advance deep into Warriors territory.
Chambers scored with 5:07 left in regulation when he barreled up the middle from 4 yards away to put McDowell ahead by 14 points.
The Titans defense created two turnovers during the second half in the form of interceptions by Martin and Reshawn Lynch to help preserve the shutout bid.
McDowell will be on the road Thursday at Asheville (7 p.m. kickoff).
