The McDowell Lady Titans volleyball team dropped a crucial 3-1 decision to the A.C. Reynolds Rockets in a key Mountain Athletic Conference match Tuesday in Asheville.
McDowell (8-3 MAC, 15-7 overall) fell into a third-place tie in the loss column with T.C. Roberson behind first place Enka and second-place A.C. Reynolds (9-2). The Lady Titans have one match left, at Enka today (5 p.m. start—jayvees, 6 p.m. start—varsity). McDowell head coach Stephanie Pace, whose team defeated Reynolds easily in the first meeting this season, said the loss likely sounded the death knell for the Lady Titans' chances at a conference title, but the club should still make the State 4A Playoffs.
McDowell dropped the first set 25-22, but evened the match with a 25-20 win in the second game. A.C. Reynolds won the final two sets 25-15 and 25-23.
"They (Reynolds) didn't do some things last time that they did this time," said Pace. "They hit the ball very effectively, and (Whitney) Brinkley was phenomenal. We were really flat and we didn't move extremely well. We had 12 service errors, and that can kill you. In the first match, we made one serve-reception error, and we made eight this time."
Tuccoa Brackett put away 13 kills and added 29 digs, 17 block assists, four assists and three solo blocks for the Lady Titans.
Tera Anderson had 12 digs, 10 assists, two kills and an ace, and Taylor Proctor added 17 assists, 15 digs and an ace. Hannah Lewis contributed 24 digs, eight kills and two assists and Megan Gouge tallied five solo blocks, five block assists and three kills.
Mary Webb had 21 digs and three aces, while Taylor Settlemyre added eight digs and five kills. Amber Fulbright contributed four digs and two kills.
McDowell's jayvees fell to the Lady Rockets in straight sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-15. Amber Fulbright had one kill, three aces and 13 points. Jessica Patrick added four kills and seven points, Cassidy Hensley two kills, an ace and six points, and Katie Orndoff two kills.
