Asheville rallies past Titans

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The McDowell Titans junior varsity football team continued to show signs of progress Thursday night as they visited Asheville's Memorial Stadium.
But it was the Cougars, and in particular, running back Josh Irby, who contributed on three touchdowns to help Asheville to a 22-8 victory.
McDowell (1-6 overall, 1-3 MAC 4A/3A) started the contest on a solid note with a long scoring drive. Tailback Reshawn Chambers (18 carries, 68 yards) had a solid game at tailback, showing more consistency running the ball.
Grant Robinson (5-of-12 passing, 49 yards, TD) connected with Josh Buckner (3 rec, 29 yards, TD) on a pair of 13-yard receptions along with a 19-yard pass play to Zach Martin to put the Titans in the red zone.
Robinson connected with Martin again at the 5:53 mark in the first quarter on a pass play from a yard away to give McDowell the lead.
That would be the only lead of the game for the Titans.
Asheville picked up a trio of touchdowns from Irby in the first half, including runs of 1 and 26 yards to give the Cougars a 14-8 lead.
Then, late in the first half, Irby completed a 64-yard halfback pass to receiver Justin Prince to give Asheville a 22-8 margin.
That would prove to be enough for the Cougars as they held McDowell off the scoreboard in the second half.
The Titans did put together a pair of scoring chances in the second half but both opportunities were halted by turnovers.
McDowell will host A.C. Reynolds Thursday (7 p.m. kickoff).
