The McDowell Titans soccer team went on a furious rally over the final minutes of play, scoring a pair of goals to slide past Erwin 3-2 Tuesday night in the home finale.
McDowell (8-10-1 overall, 2-7-1 Mountain Athletic 4A/3A), coming off a 7-0 loss to Asheville the night before which pretty much eliminated the Titans from State Playoff contention, could have easily lost confidence after going down 2-1 during the first half.
But the Titans kept fighting with a sense of pride and it paid off. McDowell scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of play to pull out the win.
"Perseverance and determination were key," said McDowell head coach Chris Ruebusch. "It was the team and their desire that helped get us the win. It was a great team effort. We did tonight something that we haven't done at times this season and that's not give up or get down after our opponent takes the lead."
Zach Wasielewski scored both goals for the Warriors in the first half to give them a 2-1 lead.
For more than 30 minutes of the second half it looked like those scores would be the difference, but the Titans picked up the intensity defensively, which set up scoring opportunities.
Alex Huendo tied the score 2-2 with exactly 10 minutes left in regulation when he scored an open-net goal.
And then, only 80 seconds later, Huendo made a spectacular pass to McKenzie McCoyle, who chipped in the game-winning goal.
"I was really worried after losing like we did the night before that we wouldn't come in and play with any sense of urgency," said Ruebusch. "But the team played very well and it's a fitting way to play our last home game."
The Titans were at A.C. Reynolds Wednesday. Results were not available at presstime.
The McDowell jayvee soccer team walloped Erwin 11-2 Tuesday.
