The McDowell Lady Titans made short work of the West Mecklenburg Lady Hawks, sweeping them 3-0 Saturday night in the opening round of the 4A State volleyball playoffs.
McDowell (17-8) gave the Lady Hawks no opportunity early on to gain any confidence. The Lady Titans came out on fire, building up a 9-1 advantage in the opening frame.
McDowell went on to capture the opening set 25-9 and never looked back, winning both the second and third sets 25-10 to advance.
"We knew that we had an advantage against West Meck," said McDowell head coach Stephanie Pace. "Even with the advantage, the girls played really hard. These early round games can be tricky if you don't come in focused. We didn't let that happen to us."
Tuccoa Brackett had a very impressive outing with 12 kills, 14 digs and five solo and assisted blocks.
Hannah Lewis (10 digs, 3 assists) added seven kills. Megan Gouge had six kills and three assisted blocks.
Lauren Mills (15 digs, 3 aces, 3 kills), Tera Anderson (16 assists, 8 digs, 2 aces 1 kill) and Taylor Proctor (8 digs, 8 assists) each had solid floor games.
The lopsided margin allowed some junior varsity players who were elevated to varsity late in the season some valuable playing time.
"My jayvee kids have used the best of their opportunity in recent weeks," added Pace. "It was good to get them time on the floor."
McDowell will advance to the second round on Tuesday, playing at Watauga (21-3), the top seed from the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference. The Pioneers swept the Lady Titans in the two regular-season matchups. The match is set for 6 p.m. in Boone.
The Pioneers won the first meeting with the Lady Titans in straight sets, 25-14, 25-16 and 25-15 back on Sept. 2. The two clubs met again Sept. 28, with Watauga taking another straight-set win by scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-21. The Lady Titans were without the services of Gouge in the second match. She missed the game with an ankle injury.
Watauga swept T.C. Roberson 3-0 Saturday. The MAC's top 4A seed, A.C. Reynolds, defeated Mooresville 3-0 in the first round.
