As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, only 58 people had cast their ballots in the early voting period for the Marion and Old Fort elections.
The one-stop early voting period started Thursday, Oct. 15 and will last through 1 p.m. Saturday. The early voting for both the Marion and Old Fort contests is being held in the county Board of Elections office on the second floor of the County Administration Building in Marion.
On Saturday, the early voting will last from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Roy Stepp, chairman of the McDowell County Board of Elections, said Tuesday he felt that the turnout has so far been "moderate."
"We had hoped for more," he said.
However, the turnout for early voting this year has been better than in previous elections.
"In the past, we may have gotten 25," said Stepp.
This year, voters in Marion and Old Fort are being asked to pick their leaders. In Marion, the office of mayor and three seats on the City Council are up for election. In Old Fort, the office of mayor and two seats on the Board of Aldermen will be contested.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. On that day, the voting in both Marion and Old Fort will start at 6:30 a.m. and end at 7:30 p.m. Voters in Marion will cast their ballots at the Community Building. Old Fort voters will make their choices at the branch library.
