The McDowell Lady Titans produced their most potent offensive display of the season Thursday as they demolished North Buncombe by a staggering 23-3 margin in Weaverville.
McDowell (8-10 overall, 5-3 Mountain Athletic 4A/3A Conference) did not have its full compliment of varsity players due to a pre-scheduled academic function, but those who were available provided more than enough offensive power, scoring in all five innings to easily overcome the Lady Hawks.
The Lady Titans quickly set the tone as they scored nine runs in their first at bat. McDowell tacked on a pair in the second followed by six more runs in the third, five in the fourth and an additional run in the fifth.
The Lady Titans were up as much as 23-1 after four-plus innings of play.
North Buncombe did score two additional runs in the fifth before getting retired to end the contest.
"It was more or less a situation where we were the better team," said McDowell head coach Bill Taylor. "We needed to take care of business early and not allow them to hang around and I thought we did a great job in doing that."
All 11 McDowell players that participated got at least one hit. Jordan Johnson led the offense with five hits, including a triple. Brandi Davis was 4-for-5, including a pair of doubles.
Taylor Settlemyre (3-for-3), Courtney Buchanan (3-for-3), Taylor Proctor (3-for-6), Holly Coker (3-for-5) and Jessie Norman (3-for-5) had three hits apiece. Freshmen Anna Pittman and Sidney Davidson had two hits each.
Proctor earned the complete-game victory on the mound, surrendering three runs on five hits.
The McDowell Lady Titans jayvees also had an easy time of it Thursday as they shut out North Buncombe 13-0. Shelby Robinson was dominant, as she struck out 10 batters in a two-hit shutout. Sidney Davidson had four hits and Kayla Allison added three hits.
McDowell will host Erwin Tuesday (4:30 start-jayvees).
