The West McDowell Lady Spartans track team edged Liberty 69-57 in a recent track meet.
West McDowell had numerous participants who earned top individual honors. Amber Benge won the seventh grade 800-meter sprint. Chelsea Hobson also placed first in the eighth grade 800-meter sprint and in the mile run.
Destiny Bartlett won both the long jump and high jump along with placing third in the triple jump. Courtney Austin also placed first in the shot and discus.
In team events, Hobson, along with Madison Allendorf, Sierra Morrow and Kim Rivas won the 4X400 relay.
In other action, West's Tyler Windham and Amy Rodriguez finished second and third respectively in the hurdles. Megan Morris had a second-place finish in the discus followed with a third-place finish in the shot.
Sierra Westbrook earned second-place honors in both the long jump and triple jump. Samantha Reese finished third in the mile run and Markia Stacey finished second in both the 100- and 200-meter competition.
Allendorf was second in the eighth grade 800 and 400. Morrow took third in the high jump. Rivas was third in the 100.
West McDowell 9, Thomas Jefferson 2 (baseball)
The West McDowell Spartans cruised to a 9-2 victory last week against Thomas Jefferson in non-conference action.
West scored three times in the bottom half of the first. Trevor Newman plated a run with a single and Landon Whitson brought in a run on a bases-loaded walk.
The Spartans added three more runs in the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Two runs scored in the frame on an error by the Gryphons second baseman. Brady Ruiz drove in the other run with a single.
After Thomas Jefferson scored two runs in the fourth inning, West answered with a single run in the fourth followed by two more in the sixth.
Coleman Arrowood blasted a home run to center in the fourth, followed by a run-scoring double in the sixth. Newman followed with another RBI single to give the Spartans a commanding lead.
The offensive support was more than enough for McClure, who picked up the win. He tossed six innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
East McDowell 5, Liberty 0 (softball)
The East McDowell Lady Trojans shut out Liberty 5-0 Monday afternoon in the Lady Trojans' last home game of the regular season.
East scored a pair of runs in the first followed by three more runs in the third to take control of the contest.
Landree Cooper had a strong outing on the mound, throwing a complete-game shutout. Cooper allowed four hits and struck out eight batters.
Lucy Morgan put the Lady Trojans ahead 1-0 on a bases-loaded walk. Kenzie Willis made the score 2-0 when she was hit by a pitch.
In the third, Cooper began the frame with a double. Then, after a pair of walks loaded the bases, East scored twice on a pair of Lady Knight errors. Shortly thereafter Willis drove in her second run of the game on a slow grounder to second.
