Evans ties SoCon high jump record

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Western Carolina University senior Matt Evans, a former track and basketball star for McDowell High, tied a Southern Conference record that had stood for more than two-and-a-half decades last weekend at the conference track and field championship meet in Boone.
Evans equaled the conference mark in the high jump, clearing 7-feet, 1-inch to win the event for the fourth consecutive season. The previous mark was set by Appalachian State's Charles Mack in 1984. Evans also bested his previous school-record mark of 7-feet, 1/2-inch, which he set in 2008.
Evans' leap ranks tenth in the NCAA East Region and qualifies him to participate in the NCAA First Round. He is the first athlete to win the event four times in a row since 1996.
