Titans take care of Erwin

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The McDowell Titans needed to take care of business against the Erwin Warriors Wednesday, and they did exactly that, scoring the first eight runs in a 10-3 win on the road.
The Titans (10-11 overall, 6-4 Mountain Athletic 4A/3A Conference) are tied with A.C. Reynolds for second place in the league's 4A race. T.C. Roberson is a game ahead at 7-3. McDowell faced Chase in non-conference play Thursday, and hosts Asheville tonight in league action (4:30 start-jayvees, 6:30 start-varsity). McDowell's finale, which promises to be crucial, is at A.C. Reynolds Monday.
Against Erwin (10-9, 3-7), the Titans got solid pitching from starter Eli Miller and took advantage of four Warriors errors. They also got three hits and four RBIs from the seven through nine spots in the batting order and a home run from Justin O'Dear.
"We got tremendous pitching from Eli," said Titans head coach Alex Smith. "They (Erwin) threatened in the third, and that was pretty much it. The top of the order has been steady, and we're getting more and more production from the bottom of the order."
Miller worked six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out eight and walked three. Miller gave up a two-run home run to Hunter Bryant in the third, and Smith said that was the only mistake pitch Miller threw. Tyler Hopkins pitched the seventh, allowing one hit and striking out one.
The Titans jumped on Erwin early with four runs in the top of the first. O'Dear (1-for-3, HR, 2RBIs) struck out, but the Erwin catcher dropped the ball and then threw it away at first, allowing O'Dear to take second. Hopkins (2-for-4, 2B, 2RBIs) drove in O'Dear with an RBI single. Brent Rowe (3-for-4) singled, Joey Duncan walked, and Nick Westmoreland (1-for-4, 2B, 2RBIs) had a two-run double.
McDowell added a run in the second when Miller (1-for-4) was hit by a pitch, stole second and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Hopkins.
The Titans scored three times in the third to take an 8-0 lead.
Rowe singled and gave way to pinch runner Ryan Lambert, who swiped second. Duncan reached on an error, and Westmoreland reached on an error that also plated a run. Dakota Arrowood moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt, and Ethan Freeman (2-for-4, 2RBIs) smacked a two-run basehit down the left field line.
Erwin scored twice in the third on Bryant's homer and added a run in the third to get within 8-3.
But the Titans answered in the fifth when Miller reached on a fielder's choice and O'Dear smashed his two-run homer.
