MHS to move Hall of Fame ceremony to fall

The winter storm that dumped as much as a foot of snow on the area forced the postponement of more than just a basketball game last Friday.
McDowell High was to have inducted the second class of its Athletic Hall of Fame between Friday's varsity girls and boys games. The basketball games (against Erwin) have been rescheduled for Feb. 10, but the hall of fame ceremony will have to wait until next football season.
Titans Athletic Director Dennis "Flea" Blake said the school plans to put the induction off until football season, and would hold all subsequent hall of fame ceremonies in the fall in order to insure winter weather doesn't interrupt the festivities again. Last year's induction, the school's first, took place in late January. Blake said the hall of fame committee would meet sometime between now and the start of football season to induct another group, which would then be honored along with this year's class next fall.
Blake said the hall of fame luncheon, held in May last year, would take place on the Saturday following the Friday-night ceremony, a scheduling change that would make things easier for those traveling from far away.
The hall was set to induct Anthony Allen (football), Sara McMann (Olympic silver medalist in wrestling), Kelly Landreth (national winner of the High School Heisman), Dwayne Ledford (football), Van McKinney (radio announcer) and Greg Sproles (state champion swimmer).
Friday's games were also slated to be fund-raisers for the American Cancer Society, with $1 from every ticket going to help fund cancer research. The fund-raiser will instead be held at the next home game. McDowell hosts Asheville High Tuesday (weather permitting).
The Asheville games were to have been McDowell's annual senior night, but the seniors will instead be recognized at the Erwin games Feb. 10, the final regular-season home games for MHS.
Both the Titans and Lady Titans are in hot pursuit of Mountain Athletic 4A/3A Conference championships.
The Titans (8-0 MAC, 18-0 overall) are coming off an 82-76 win at North Buncombe last Wednesday that clinched the 4A league title (there will also be a 3A champ). McDowell, ranked third in the state among 4A teams in the latest NCPreps.com poll, is off to its best start since the 1991-92 season, and needs two wins in its final four games to claim the overall MAC title, which would be its second league championship in the last four years.
Meanwhile, the second-ranked Lady Titans appear headed for a showdown with second-place A.C. Reynolds. McDowell (8-0, 19-0) beat North Buncombe, the eighth-ranked 3A team, 74-37 last Wednesday. The Lady Titans own a one-game lead over Reynolds (7-1), and beat the Lady Rockets 74-61 in the first meeting between the two Jan. 12. McDowell is at A.C. Reynolds this Friday. The Lady Titans won the last three Northwestern 4A Conference titles and captured six of the last seven.
McDowell's junior varsity teams are also chasing MAC perfection. The Titans are 15-0 overall and 8-0 in the conference, while the Lady Titans are 8-0 in league play and 12-4 overall. The jayvee girls tip off Tuesday's four-game slate at 4 p.m.
