The McDowell Titans wrestling team placed a solid fourth in its inaugural Mountain Athletic 4A/3A Conference tournament, winning a pair of individual championships along the way at T.C. Roberson Saturday.
The Titans scored 104 team points to place behind five-time defending champion Enka (213.5), T.C. Roberson (192) and North Buncombe (147). Erwin (77), A.C. Reynolds (21.5) and Asheville (7) finished fifth through seventh respectively.
McDowell might have made a run for third place, but three wrestlers, including Tyler Radford, who was seeded first at 189, were stuck at home because of the winter storm that hit the area Thursday and Friday.
Senior Jacob Hensley (152 pounds) and freshman Alex Huendo (125) were the Titans' conference champs, the first two for McDowell's third-year head coach, Steve Leight.
Hensley recorded pins in the first round and semifinals, and then scored a 14-4 major decision over Enka's Lee White in the championship bout. Hensley improved his individual record to 34-5 with the three victories.
Huendo squared off against T.C. Roberson's Ken McAfee in a high-scoring final at 125. But the freshman held on for a 17-11 victory.
Nathan Marsh (171) made the finals but was pinned by North Buncombe's Dallas Rice in the second period. Rice, the state's third-ranked 171-pounder, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Marsh is now 33-8 overall, but five of those losses have come at the hands of grapplers ranked in the top three in the state, while the other three were to wrestlers ranked eighth, ninth and tenth. And Marsh bounced back to avenge two of those three losses.
Tyrell Burel (130) won in the consolation finals and placed third for the Titans.
Patrick Lee (112), Toney Johnston (135) and Corbin Hester (160) each placed fourth, with all three garnering at least two victories.
Joshue Edwards (285), a freshman, lost to two seniors and did not place.
The Titans will compete in the West Regionals in two weeks in Charlotte. Leight said McDowell may compete in a tri-meet this week, but dates and times have not been announced.
