It was deja-vu for the West McDowell Lady Spartans basketball team as, for the second time this season, they were able to withstand a late-game rally to defeat county rival East McDowell 35-31 in Foothills Conference action.
West took an early 11-7 lead after one quarter and extended it to nine points (21-12) at halftime. East came out in the third and answered with a 7-0 run to trim the Lady Spartans' lead to 21-19.
Kassie Brackett made two field goals, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Kylee Lenon also scored a basket for East during the rally.
The Lady Trojans were able to stay within a one- or two-possession margin the rest of the way.
East tied the game on two occasions, including 29-29 on a Brackett score with 2:04 left in the contest.
Victoria Laney (4 points) scored a minute later to give the lead back to West. Then, after a turnover, the Lady Spartans put the game to rest with a bucket by Karly McRary with 35 seconds left and an additional free throw by McRary with 12 seconds left.
McRary led the Lady Spartans in scoring with 14 points and three rebounds. Markia Stacey (3 rebounds, 2 assists) added seven points. Riley Smith and Brittany Pannell tallied four points each. Aryonna Noblitt chipped in two points.
Brackett led East with a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds. Lenon (3 rebounds) and April Fulbright added five points each. Victoria Nichols (7 rebounds) netted three points and Leslie Rice scored two points.
East McDowell 53, West McDowell 45 (boys basketball)
The East McDowell Trojans exacted some revenge for last month's loss to the West McDowell Spartans.
Two Trojans scored in double figures as they pulled out a 53-45 victory Thursday.
East got a big outing from a usual source. Raekwan Miller poured in 21 points and dished out three assists to lead the Trojans. Miller's performance was complimented by that of Taylor Parkins, who scored 17 points and pulled four rebounds.
The Trojans had control from the start, taking a quick 15-5 lead after one quarter.
East did allow the Spartans to hang around in the contest during the second and third quarters. West was able to stay as close as five points on several different occasions.
The Trojans were ahead 29-24 as late as the final minute of the third quarter when East exploded for 10 unanswered points to end the quarter and to effectively end the contest.
Parkins hit a pair of 3-pointers during the span to help the Trojans pull away.
Ryan Kincaid added eight points. Dakota Lister scored five points and Eric Olivo netted two points.
Coleman Arrowood led West McDowell with 22 points and nine rebounds. Tyler Farmer added 10 points. Brady Ruiz, Patrick McClure and Landon Whitson scored four points apiece. Austin Ledbetter added two points.
