The Hendersonville Christian Mustangs threw a homecoming party Friday night, but it was the Marion Christian Academy Knights who ended up celebrating.
The Knights fought off a furious Mustangs comeback attempt and held on for a 54-52 victory that clinched MCA's second consecutive Blue Ridge Christian Conference regular-season championship in the conference's second year of existence.
Marion Christian (4-0 BRCC, 14-4 overall) has two league games remaining, but could lose them both and still win the title. That means the Knights are guaranteed a trip to Dayton, Tenn., for the National Association of Christian Athletes (NACA) national tournament. It will be the third straight trip to the NACA tourney for MCA.
The Knights led most of the game Friday and owned a 29-19 lead at the half. But Hendersonville made a determined comeback and got within two at 54-52. The Mustangs had the ball with three seconds left, but MCA's Shaq Symonette deflected an inbounds pass and Zach Cotter intercepted the ball to end the threat.
Johnny Wrenn (7 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals) and Christian McClendon (5 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 block) scored 13 each to lead the Knights. Symonette (9 rebounds) added 12 and Cotter (5 rebounds, 4 assists) had nine points. Cody Hughes (4 assists) tossed in five.
Marion Christian 81, North Asheville Christian 29 — The Knights had an easy go of it Thursday, using their full-court pressure to run away from North Asheville. Most of the Knights' starting rotation spent the second half on the bench in the blowout win.
McClendon (9 rebounds) tossed in 15 to lead MCA. Brandon Marsh (8 rebounds) added 14, Cotter (4 assists, 2 steals) 11 and Freddy Collins (4 steals) 10.
Wrenn (5 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals) tossed in nine. Brent Nichols added eight, Andrew Boone seven, Symonette (6 rebounds, 2 blocks) six and Cody Hughes two.
Marion Christian 47, Hendersonville Christian 18 (varsity girls) — Marion Christian improved to 10-5 overall and 4-0 in BRCC play with an impressive win over Hendersonville Christian.
Haley Broadwell had 16 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots to lead the way. Jordan Guice (7 rebounds) added 10 points.
Kelsey Webb (8 rebounds) and Becca Mathison (5 steals) chipped in eight apiece. Kasey Conley (9 rebounds, 3 assists) scored three and Lindsey Robinson (2 steals) two.
Marion Christian 34, North Asheville 32 (varsity girls) — The Lady Knights got a huge game from Guice and edged North Asheville 34-32.
Guice had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Broadwell (12 rebounds) tossed in eight.
Webb tallied four and Conley three.
Marion Christian 58, North Asheville 39 (jayvee boys) — Orrie Johnson had 27 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Knights (4-0, 10-2) past North Asheville.
Sam Ward (5 steals) scored 10 points, Christian Lankford seven and Wesley Hensley (6 rebounds, 4 assists) six. Nate Laws added four points, Lowell Hobbs two and Johnny Cooper (6 steals, 5 assists, 3 rebounds) two.
Marion Christian 54, Hendersonville 24 (jayvee boys) — The Knights cruised to a victory behind 21 points from Steven Collins.
Lankford (5 rebounds) added 11. Cooper tallied 10, Daniel Gibbs eight and Ward two.
Marion Christian hosted Veritas Tuesday. Results were not available at presstime.
