The second chance unfortunately was not the charm for the McDowell Lady Titans softball team as they lost 6-1 to Owen in the second game in as many nights against the 2A power.
McDowell (1-2), coming off a 10-0 shutout against the Warlassies on Monday, found itself in a challenge against one of the stronger lineups from top to bottom that the Lady Titans will face all season.
Owen scored a run in the first on an RBI triple from Stephanie Jones. The Warlassies then added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Owen added two more runs for good measure in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead.
Meanwhile, the Lady Titans struggled at the plate, mustering only five hits in the contest. McDowell's first hit didn't come until the bottom half of the third inning on a leadoff single up the middle by Jessie Norman.
The Lady Titans finally scratched in the sixth, scoring one run.
Freshman Courtney Buchanan led off the inning with a single. Buchanan eventually scored the only McDowell run of the game two batters later on a squeeze play from Kaylee Long.
"Owen is one of the best teams we will see all year outside the conference," said first-year McDowell head coach Bill Taylor. "We didn't play well at all over there Monday, so our goal was to be more competitive and I thought we did a better job at that. They nickled and dimed us all evening, but they never got the one really big inning like they did at their place. Taylor (Proctor) did a good job pitching. We tried to change speeds on them. I think we learned a lot from these past two games as a team and it should help us in our next few games."
Proctor went the distance for McDowell, allowing six runs on eight hits. Proctor struck out two batters. Her consist ability to pitch within the strike zone showed as she allowed only one walk.
Jordan Johnson had a pair of singles for McDowell.
The Lady Titans jayvees were successful prior to the varsity matchup, earning a 12-10 victory. Trailing 10-7 after five innings, the Lady Titans rallied for five runs in the last two frames.
Anna Pittman was the pitcher of record, earning a three-inning victory in relief of Cassidy Hensley. Pittman allowed two hits and one walk. Pittman recorded three strikeouts. Kayla Allison, Jessica Patrick, Shellie Riddle and Taylor Miller had two hits apiece.
Due to a scheduling conflict, McDowell's next game will be at home Saturday against former Northwestern 4A foe East Burke (2 p.m. start). There will be no junior varsity game Saturday.
Owen 10, McDowell 0 - The Lady Titans began the game by putting runners on second and third with one out, but they couldn't drive either of them in and things snowballed from there.
Owen scored four runs in its half of the first.
Danielle Peek absorbed the loss on the mound. Proctor and Kali Bartlett each singled to account for McDowell's only hits.
The Lady Titans jayvees whipped Owen 9-1 Monday. Hensley allowed four runs on one hit in seven innings of work, striking out 10 and walking four.
Morgan Vess and Jessica Patrick each went 3-for-3 and Kayla Allison was 2-for-4.
