The October unemployment rate rose in 61 of the state's 100 North Carolina counties, including McDowell, which neared double-digit unemployment, according to figures released today from the N.C. Employment Security Commission.
McDowell's rate for October was 9.3 percent, above the state average of 6.7 percent and up from the September county rate of 8 percent.
Out of a labor force of 22,09, there were 2,050 people classified as unemployed.
