Keith Turner has paved the way and he hopes McDowell folks have the drive to turn out Saturday and make Christmas brighter for hundreds of local kids.
Turner's Cruise In for a Cause this weekend will benefit Project Christmas, a local program in its 25th year of providing gifts to needy children and food to their families.
"I've always wanted to do a toy run," Turner stated. "People have been really receptive to this idea. I just hope and pray it turns out good."
The main event will be a car/truck/motorcycle show. Entrants will meet at McDowell Technical Community College Saturday morning. They'll leave the college at 10 a.m. and parade from N.C. 226 South to Main Street to the five lane to U.S. 70 West. They'll end up at Tom Johnson Rally Park, where there will also be carriage rides, singing, an auction, an Elvis impersonator, food and appearances by Santa Claus and 1960 NASCAR Champion Rex White, who will be signing autographs.
The entry fee for the car show is $10 or a $10 toy. Turner said 100 percent of those proceeds, as well as those from the auction, go to Project Christmas. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available.
"It's a good cause, and, right now, it's something I plan on doing every year," said the organizer.
Turner emphasized that the show is not only for cars but for trucks and motorcycles as well. He said there will be no trophies awarded.
"This is all just for fun," he stated.
The festivities are scheduled to end at 3 p.m.
Turner said he wanted to thank Tom Johnson's for allowing the use of their park and Robertson Packaging Supply Inc. and J. Woody Home Improvements for paying for White's travel and stay expenses.
