BOONE -- Economic activity in Western North Carolina dropped by 0.1 percentage point in February, according to an index of a 25-county region that includes Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes.

The index fell to 113 and has declined for seven consecutive months.

However, it was the smallest decrease during that time span.

"It's not all bad news, which is an improvement," said Todd Cherry, a co-author of the index and a professor of economics at Appalachian State University. "Another bit of good news is that the regional economy also showed more strength than the statewide economy, which is noteworthy because the region has been lagging relative to the state during this recession."
