Three McDowell Titans wrestlers competed in the State 4A Championships at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem this weekend.
Senior Caleb Null (125 pounds), junior Jacob Hensley (152) and freshman Patrick Lee (103) advanced to the championships at last week's West Regionals.
Null fell by pinfall to Kamal Leak of South View in the first round, but then picked up a forfeit win over Kevin Whitley of Davie County in the consolation bracket.
Jeremy Althizer of New Bern pulled out a 4-2 decision over Null in the second round of the consolation tournament. Null went 1-2 in the event and finished the season with a sparkling 36-9 individual record.
Lee was pinned in the first round by eventual runner-up Garrison White of J.M. Robinson. But, like Null, he advanced in the first round of the consolation tourney via a forfeit win over Zakery Watts of Scotland.
Lee then fell by technical fall to Demarkus Brewington of Grimsley in the second round of consolations. Lee's 1-2 mark at states gave him a 20-12 individual record.
Hensley dropped a 13-5 major decision to Bernard Thomas of Fayetteville Byrd in the first round. Jordan Fearrington of Jordan pinned Hensley in the opening round of consolations. Hensley finished the season with a 31-14 overall record.
