The McDowell Department of Social Service's Food and Nutrition program will begin a countywide outreach effort for senior citizens starting in the greater Old Fort area.
McDowell County's Food and Nutrition staff will begin taking food applications, especially targeting the elderly, homebound and disabled citizens, in June.
"Food benefits once known as the old food stamp program have seen modifications that better serve our elderly population," said Denise Prewitt, Food and Nutrition supervisor. "We are currently better staffed and committed to a more aggressive outreach effort. Homebound and disabled citizens many times need that extra attention and we look forward to meeting with them in Old Fort or at their home. Meals on Wheels volunteers have also been very helpful in identifying special circumstances."
Food application appointments beginning Thursday, June 11 can be made through the A.C. "Bud" Hogan Nutrition Site by calling Mary Grindstaff at 668-4867.
Homebound and disabled citizens may be seen at their residence by appointment by calling 652-3355, ext. 115 starting June 1.
Andy Webb, outreach worker with the program and a county commissioner, said he would also continue to work targeted areas of McDowell as the summer progresses such as the communities of North Cove, Woodlawn and Turkey Cove as well as the greater Marion area.
"My focus will remain the underserved population in Food and Nutrition outreach," he said.
