It was another successful season for the West McDowell Lady Spartans soccer team.
West won both the Foothills Conference regular-season and tournament championships in girls soccer for the second consecutive season.
Last week, the Lady Spartans shut out Walter Johnson 2-0 in the conference tournament championship game.
Courtney Austin accounted for both goals in the contest, with one goal on a free kick and the other off a deflection from a Walter Johnson player.
That margin was more than enough for the Lady Spartans' defense, who shut down the Yellow Jackets. Talah Brittain had another solid outing at keeper, recording six saves in the championship game. Brittain finished the season with 84 saves.
"Every single one of my girls worked so hard to win this game today by being first to every ball, staying aggressive, and never giving up," said West McDowell head coach Stephanie Faw. "They hit the field determined to win this game not just for me, not just for the school, but for themselves also. I am so proud of each and every one of these girls."
East Burke 3, East McDowell 1 (volleyball)
The East McDowell Lady Trojans' season came to an end last week when they lost in straight sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-20) to East Burke in the volleyball tournament semifinals.
East (11-3 overall) finished the regular season with a 10-2 record, sharing the conference crown with East Burke and Heritage. The Lady Raiders accounted for a pair of the Lady Trojans' losses this season.
NOTE: The winter sports schedule for the local junior highs begins next week. Both West McDowell basketball teams will travel to Cranberry on Tuesday while the Spartans wrestling team will host Cranberry. The Trojans and Lady Trojans basketball teams will open Tuesday at Cane River. The East McDowell wrestling team will host Gamewell and Cane River Thursday.
