New Manna Christian School
The New Manna Wind got a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer by Aaron Vallini and edged the Marion Christian Academy Knights 60-58 in a battle of county private school rivals.
Vallini scored a game-high 23 points for the Wind. Ethan Truett had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Anthony Vallini tossed in 14.
Shaquille Symonette scored 12 and Johnny Wrenn added nine for the Knights.
In the varsity girls game, New Manna got a pair of key 3-pointers from Megan Mahan — one of them with only two seconds left — and pulled out a 44-43 victory.
Mahan scored 14 to lead New Manna. Hannah Sailors added 13 and pulled seven boards. Sarah Wilcox snagged six rebounds.
The Knights' jayvee boys edged New Manna 30-28. Nathan Frazzeto tossed in 21 for the Wind.
New Manna hosts Tabernacle (Hickory) Tuesday. The varsity girls tip off at 4:30. Meanwhile, Marion Christian visits McDowell High Tuesday (5 p.m. start—varsity girls).
Marion Christian Academy
After a disappointing setback to New Manna, the Marion Christian Knights bounced back in a huge way last week, walloping Christian Family 101-34 Thursday and Hickory Christian 83-20 Friday.
Marion Christian (6-1) put five players in double figures in its rout of Christian Family in the first game ever at MCA's new gymnasium.
Johnny Wrenn (7 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals) led all scorers with 20 points. Matt Lytle (3 steals) tossed in 17, and Shaquille Symonette narrowly missed a triple-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks. Freddy Collins (7 assists) chipped in with 11 points, as did Brent Nichols.
Christian McClendon had nine points and six rebounds, while Zach Cotter scored eight, Cody Hughes five and Brandon Marsh four.
The Knights easily improved to 2-0 in their new gym with an easy win over Hickory Christian. Wrenn (7 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 blocks) led all scorers with 18 points.
McClendon, a 6-6 junior, posted 14 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Nichols hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points. Collins added 10 points and six assists. Symonette added eight points and five boards.
Cotter scored seven, Lytle and Marsh four apiece and Hughes (5 assists, 5 steals) scored two.
In varsity girls action, the Lady Knights (2-1) whipped Family Christian 60-6 and Hickory Christian 40-14.
Haley Broadwell had 24 points and 12 rebounds in the win over Family. Kasey Conley (8 assists) added 10 points.
Jordan Guice (6 rebounds) added eight, Kelsey Webb (6 rebounds) and Tiffany Watson (5 rebounds) tallied six apiece, and Lindsey Robinson (6 steals), Kelsie Jones and Becca Mathis tossed in two each.
Against Hickory Christian, Broadwell had a second consecutive double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Robinson tossed in seven, Conley six and Watson two.
The MCA jayvee boys (3-0) defeated Family Christian 56-40 behind 18 points from Steven Collins. Orrie Johnson (8 rebounds) scored 12 points, Wesley Hensley 10 and Johnny Cooper eight.
Marion Christian stopped Hickory 42-18. Collins (5 rebounds) scored 12 points, while Sam Ward added nine. Johnson (8 rebounds) and Cooper (8 assists) had six points apiece. Hensley added five and Cody Ledford and Nate Laws chipped in two apiece.
