Maybe McDowell County should look across the pond for an answer to the illegal immigrant problem. This head line says it all in this Guardian story from the UK: "'Gordon Brown spares Baroness Scotland over employment of illegal immigrant."
"Prime minister lets attorney general keep job after she is fined £5,000 for employing illegal immigrant as housekeeper"
That is roughly about $10,000 at today's exchange rates.
Why can't McDowell county fine the non-farming employers of illegal's $10,000 for each infraction. That would kill two birds with one stone: (1) solve the illegal immigrant problem, and (2) relieve our double-digit unemployment, when cheap illegal labor becomes to expensive to use.
Marion could be the ground breaker in turning the tide of illegals back to South and Central America. Make those employers responsible for the illegal immigrant problem pay for the illegal immigrant problem that their greed created. Our city and county leaders should be leading the charge to alleviate the unfair competition of cheap and illegal labor. This cheap illegal labor force is destroying the mountain culture as it creeps into jobs that have been traditionally held by mountain folk. The illegals are not the problem. The ones who exploit cheap labor are.
