ASHEVILLE — Fans who enjoy tense, defensive standoffs would have been better served staying at home.
The Erwin Warriors scored 28 straight points in a 5:16 span of the second quarter to build a 44-14 halftime lead, and cruised to a 58-35 win over the McDowell Titans Friday. The two squads combined for 868 yards of offense, with the Warriors totaling 504 of it.
The Titans (1-7 overall, 1-2 Mountain Athletic Conference) were as close as 16-14 early in the second quarter. But Erwin (5-3, 2-1) got a series of huge plays from its trio of stars — quarterback Garret Brown, receiver Shaquan Curenton and running back Martese Jackson — and broke open the game.
McDowell trailed 58-14 before scoring the game's final 21 points. The Titans finished with season-highs in both points and total yards (364) and got touchdown catches from five different receivers, but they couldn't answer Erwin's explosive offense during the torrid second quarter.
Despite the loss, McDowell had a number of outstanding individual offensive performances.
Quarterback Dakota Arrowood was 14-of-29 passing for 210 yards and three touchdowns (2 interceptions). Backup quarterback Michael Queen went 3-for-3 for 71 yards and two more scores. Receiver Ryan Lambert had a career night, making five catches for 124 yards, including a 69-yard TD reception, the team's longest play from scrimmage this season.
The Titans also got touchdown catches from Brent Rowe (3-35-TD), Matt Lytle (2-29-TD), Heath Nanney (2-56-TD) and Joe Johnson (1-18-TD). Tim Velez, making his first start at tailback, rushed for 42 yards on 10 carries.
But as good as McDowell was with the pigskin, Erwin was better.
Brown was 9-of-13 passing for 240 yards and three touchdowns — all three to Curenton — who caught six passes for 170 yards and scores of 52, 38 and 51 yards. Jackson rushed 16 times for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Brown carried four times for 56 yards and another rushing score.
The Warriors built a 9-0 lead on a safety and a 20-yard TD run from Jackson in the first quarter, but the Titans got within 9-7 on Arrowood's 6-yard pass to Rowe with 11:49 left in the second quarter.
On the next play from scrimmage, Brown hit Curenton for a 52-yard touchdown play to make it 16-7, but McDowell fought back again.
The Titans drew within 16-14 on Arrowood's 13-yard scoring pass to Lytle with 8:08 to go in the half.
Then, the floodgates opened.
Jackson went 4 yards for a score at the 7:20 mark; Brown threw a 15-yard scoring strike to Max Eatmon; Brown hit Curenton along the sideline for a 38-yard touchdown; and Brown found Curenton one more time for a 51-yarder.
When the smoke cleared at the 2:04 mark of the second period, it was 44-14.
Brown's 17-yard touchdown run made it 51-14 with 9:45 remaining in the third quarter. Backup tailback D.J. Gilbeaux added the final Erwin touchdown on a 27-yard run with 2:03 left in the third.
From that point, it was all Titans. Arrowood and Lambert hooked up on a 69-yard touchdown play with 1:22 to go in the third. Queen took over in the final quarter, throwing an 18-yarder to Johnson and a 38-yarder to Nanney to close the scoring with 41 seconds left to play.
McDowell hosts unbeaten Asheville High Friday in the annual homecoming game (7:30 kickoff).
