McDowell Lady Titans sophomore golfer Madalyn Davis is a 4A State Tournament qualifier for the second straight year.
Davis shot a 99 at the West 4A Regionals at Cedar Rock in Lenoir Monday, finishing in 19th place in a field of 79 players. The cut for next week's state championship was 105. The top 29 players — including 12 from the top four finishing teams — advanced, with 17 individual spots available.
The championships are set for Foxfire Country Club in Pinehurst next Monday and Tuesday. Players will practice on the course Sunday.
The Lady Titans' Bethaney Lewis also competed in the regionals, shooting a 124.
McDowell head coach Charles Webber said he was proud of both players. Davis sustained a shoulder injury two weeks ago and missed the Lady Titans' final two regular-season matches. But she had already qualified for regionals, and returned just in time.
"I was just glad she (Davis) got to play, because we weren't sure there for a while," said Webber. "Her short game wasn't as good as it usually is and her timing was a little bit off, but she hit her drives very straight. I thought Bethaney did a real good job and maintained a good attitude all season."
The players battled not only each other but also 32-degree temperatures and a 20-minute delay. Webber said some groups took nearly six hours to complete their rounds. "It was tough conditions," said Webber.
