The McDowell Titans soccer team had its share of ups and downs this year, but the Titans definitely wrapped up the campaign on a high note.
McDowell (9-11-1 overall, 3-8-1 Mountain Athletic Conference) shut out the Enka Jets 2-0 Monday on the road in the regular-season finale. The MAC receives two automatic State 4A Playoff berths, but T.C. Roberson and A.C. Reynolds finished 1-2 in the league standings. There are three wild card berths available in the western 4A playoffs, so the Titans could still technically make the postseason.
"It was a great game as all the boys played well," said Titans head coach Chris Ruebusch. "But it was sad as it is most likely the last game for all the seniors. The leadership and experience will be sorely missed. But this was a great way to end the season."
The Titans took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Alex Huendo. Huendo's shot was set up by an Ian Gillan kick that bounced off the side post.
Gillan added a goal on a penalty kick after Sasha Mueller was knocked down in the box.
"We got great all-around play by Cristian Bautista, Eli Campos, and the keeper, James Ledbetter," Ruebusch said.
