One man lost his life and another his freedom over $4.25, authorities say.
Kenneth Hayward, 43, and Walter Davis, 66, who both lived at Cedarbrook Residential Center on Pinnacle Church Road in Nebo, got into a altercation over money that Davis borrowed from Hayward, said Sheriff Dudley Greene.
Now one is dead and the other is facing a murder charge.
Deputies were called to the assisted living facility at 7:15 p.m. Monday in reference to an assault.
"We don't have any indication that a weapon was used," Greene stated. "It appears that it was a hand-to-hand fight, but we are still investigating that."
Davis was taken to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville Monday evening, and Hayward was transferred from Cedarbrook to a similar facility in Kernersville, according to the sheriff.
Greene said investigators talked to Davis at the hospital Wednesday. The victim was stable and recuperating from his injuries, one of the most prominent being a cranial bleed, according to Greene. He said it appeared Davis was going to make a full recovery.
However, the victim's condition deteriorated Wednesday night into Thursday, and he died Thursday afternoon, said the sheriff.
Hayward has been taken into custody, returned to McDowell County and charged with murder.
