The West McDowell Spartans wrestling team finished the regular-season schedule last week with a pair of easy wins to claim the Foothills Conference season championship for the second straight year.
The Spartans opened the week by dominating East Burke 84-9 in the first match on Monday.
Casey Heldman (85 pounds) and Michael Pressley (95) set the tone of the match early with pinfalls.
West earned seven additional victories by pin and five by forfeit.
On Thursday, West traveled to Drexel and clinched the season title with a 63-24 win against the Heritage Eagles.
The victory preserved a perfect record for the Spartans (13-1 overall, 12-0 FHC) in the Foothills Conference.
Cody Gilliam (127), Derek Snyder (142) and Wesley Davis (158) continued to lead the way for West, staying undefeated on the season individually, winning matches in their respect weight classes.
Jacob Gardner (105), Cody Walsh (114), Trey Anderson (132), Caleb Goforth (147), Legend Pressley (173) and Dalton Henderson (217) also earned victories against the Eagles by pinfall.
Jonathan Atkins had a strong outing in the 137-division bout with a 16-10 victory. Devin Lackey took the 191-weight class bout by forfeit.
"As a coaching staff we are very proud of our boys," said West McDowell head coach Scott Page. "They have worked really hard this season and rose to the challenge."
West McDowell will be hosting the Foothills Conference wrestling tournament on Wednesday (2 p.m. start).
East Burke 40, West McDowell 35 (girls basketball)
The West McDowell Lady Spartans had their hands full last week in a 40-35 loss against East Burke Middle School.
West got a strong performance from guard Markia Stacy, who scored 23 points and dished out three assists.
But Stacy was the only Lady Spartan who scored in double figures. West struggled against a talented Lady Raiders squad, which featured an abundance of size, especially in the interior.
Karly McRary (7 points, 4 rebounds) made only three field goals in the contest. Riley Smith (8 rebounds) added four points. Brittany Pannell (2 assists) and Aryonna Noblitt (9 rebounds) scored two points each.
East Burke held the lead for a majority of the contest. The Lady Raiders were ahead 18-11 at halftime and 28-24 after three quarters.
West was able to get within a one-possession deficit on a couple occasions but was not able to draw even.
East Burke 37, West McDowell 29 (boys basketball)
Much like in the girls contest, the East Burke Raiders took a late first-half lead and were able to hold on 37-29 in boys basketball action.
Five West McDowell players scored in the contest but none placed in double figures. Coleman Arrowood (11 rebounds) led the Spartans with nine points. Patrick McClure (2 rebounds, 2 assists) added eight points.
Brady Ruiz chipped in six points, Tyler Farmer (5 rebounds) tallied five points and Austin Ledbetter scored one point.
Walter Johnson 40, East McDowell 30 (girls basketball)
The Walter Johnson Lady Jackets led wire-to-wire en route to a 40-30 victory against East McDowell Thursday afternoon in the Lady Trojans home finale.
Kassie Brackett led East McDowell with nine points and three rebounds in a losing effort. Kylee Lenon (6 rebounds) added six points. Leslie Rice netted five points and nine rebounds.
Victoria Nichols tallied four points. April Fulbright, Alyssa Detwiler and Rosa Fowler scored two points apiece.
Walter Johnson 50, East McDowell 48 (boys basketball)
A strong 12-0 first quarter proved crucial for the Walter Johnson Jackets Thursday as they were able to hold off a late East McDowell rally to win 50-48.
Walter Johnson held a lead as high as 20 points at halftime before a furious rally by the Trojans. In the end, East ran out of time before completely erasing the large first-half deficit.
East McDowell's leading scorer Raekwan Miller didn't start against on Thursday against the Jackets but he came off the bench strong, scoring a team-high 17 points and dishing out five assists. Miller was the only Trojan to place in double figures.
Ryan Kincaid (5 rebounds) tallied nine points. Dakota Lister and D.J. Martin (6 rebounds) added seven apiece. Martin's offensive production came in a reserve role.
Taylor Parkins chipped in four points and six rebounds. Mark Thomas and Ethan Owensby scored two points each.
East was at Table Rock Monday in the regular-season finale. Results were not available at press time.
