Are you a poet and you know it?
The North Carolina Arts Council is accepting online nominations for the state's next poet laureate through Oct. 9. The poet laureate promotes North Carolina writers and poetry.
The poet laureate receives a $10,000 annual stipend funded by the N.C. Arts Council, along with staff support. Duties typically include public activities with schools, community groups and the media, and contact with writers and readers.
The most recent laureate, Kathryn Stripling Byer, developed the Writers & Books Web pages on the N.C. Arts Council's Web site, highlighting North Carolina writers of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. She also started a blog.
The selection committee meets this fall to review nominations and make recommendations to the governor, who will announce the new poet laureate next January.
