I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the students and staff of Hildebran Elementary School to thank all the veterans and currently serving soldiers, who made our second annual Community Veterans Day a huge success. We were pleased to welcome approximately 75 men and women to our school to be honored for their service. We wanted to honor them, but they in turn honored us by sharing of their service and memories. Our students gained more than will ever be expressed in mere words.

On behalf of the Mercy Animal Rescue, I wish to extend our sincere thank you for the overwhelming support of our bake sale held on Saturday, Oct. 24.
In response to Tuesday's article by Charles Haynes, "Hate Crimes Bill Protects Free Speech," there are many flaws in his presentation.
On Tuesday night at the Community Building, the City Council proposed the streetscape plan they have been working on since 2003. This plan was presented to inform and to seek ideas and suggestions from the public.
I would like to comment about the last letter written by this paper's Top Letter to the Editor Writer, Jim Duncan. A little research goes a long way.
Congratulations to our football team on their home win last Friday night! It was a great honor for me to be a part of catering the pregame meal for the The McDowell High Fightin' Titans.
I found Mike Ornberg's expression of frustration with the city government and Jim Brady's opinions on how City Council operates interesting.
Mr. Duncan, I'm well aware of the definition of "dictator." Dictators are not freely elected, nor do they try to reach bipartisan consensus.
This brief letter is in response to the letter dated Oct. 1 titled "Hire Americans First." I believe that it is a well-known fact that there appears to be a shortage of jobs currently.
Mr.Duncan, the main focus of your letter was not the state of the country. You only spoke of racism and prejudice of some group of people. Seems to me that you also fall into that category because of your statements.
Maybe McDowell County should look across the pond for an answer to the illegal immigrant problem. This head line says it all in this Guardian story from the UK: "'Gordon Brown spares Baroness Scotland over employment of illegal immigrant."
Oct. 2, 2009 is the 80th year to date of the unjustified murders of Samuel Vickers, 54; Tilden Carver, 54; Luther Bryson, 22; J.W. Roberts, 17; James Jonas, 61; and Randolph Hall, 23. I think someone should have given a special memorial honoring the six who died, but I guess I'm the only one who thinks that!
Letter writers Mr. Roth and Mr. Futch should look up the definition of dictator. If Obama isn't a dictator, why does he try to circumvent the U.S. Constitution by appointing czars?
Recently we were robbed... again. We have been robbed five times since Febuary of this year. Before, they stole my husband's tools, shoplight, tie downs, things like that. This time they went too far.
In response to all the illegal immigrants, I have tried as an Americian citizen to get on with the state and other contractors and I never hear any response.
McDowell County has the highest unemployment rate in surrounding counties.I moved here in 2005. Businesses were booming. I went and applied for a job, and I'm telling you, I got that job within five minutes.
Friends, we have waited around (accepting whatever came out of Washington) until the dumb, elected, self-serving politicians think we work for them. Think about it. Everyone is concerned about healthcare reform, as we should be.
First of all, I want to clarify something. Will Crawford, who operates the hot dog stand, told me that it was NOT a council member who said he would not bring any jobs into the city, it was actually Mike Ornberg. I apologize to the City Council members for my misunderstanding.
I am a relative newcomer to Marion, having only moved my business and my family here in the last year, but I've come up here for nearly five years now.
In a recent article about allowing illegal immigrants to attend college, I found out that Gov. Perdue is not with reality.
Hot dog carts? You've got to be kidding me.
House Rep. Joe Wilson of S.C., who called President Obama a liar during his speech to Congress, was right in my opinion. I am disappointed that he apologized.
In my letter to the editor "Hot dog cart seems to be losing proposition" published Sept. 23, at the end of the letter I said stay tuned for my interview with the "Hot Dog Man."
OK, let's try another idea for the hot dog cart issue. I originally believed that $100 per year was a form of "rent" application for a downtown property and that the payment was too low for the location. My mistake. I now know this fee is not considered "rent"! I was not behind the raised figure of $1,200 per year, but I admit that I did not fight against the proposal by the Planning Board.
In a recent television panel discussion of the massive government overhaul of the nation's health care system, I heard a most interesting analogy.
