The only thing investigators know for sure about the man found dead in his East Marion home Wednesday is his identity.
They combed for clues inside and outside the residence, conducted interview after interview and chased down leads most of the day, but, at deadline, they still weren't exactly sure what happened to 40-year-old Johnny Ray Haney at his 46 J.S. McMann Drive residence.
Marion Police Chief Mika Elliott stated outside the house early Wednesday afternoon that Haney was deceased but the cause of his death -- and whether or not foul play was involved – had not been determined.
"We're making sure we cover all our bases," he said. "We're working under the assumption that there was foul play until we know otherwise. Nothing is showing us that there definitely was foul play, but we're proceeding with an abundance of caution."
An autopsy was scheduled to be performed today in Winston-Salem, and Investigative Sgt. Chris Taylor said those results would help point detectives in the right direction.
Elliott stated that a woman found Haney at his residence Wednesday. Paramedics arrived on the scene and notified Marion police officers around 10 a.m.
Aiding with the case are members of the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and the McDowell County Sheriff's Office.
