Some interesting images, both in color and black-and-white, are on display this month at the MACA gallery.
For the graduating photography students from McDowell Technical Community, it is the culmination of two years' worth of work and study. They have taken numerous photos, using both digital cameras and more traditional equipment.
Students Sandra Gordon, Rachel Suggs and Ben Hollifield are proud of their work. They also enjoyed the time and effort required to capture their unique perspectives.
Gordon, 37, said she traveled quite a bit and looked for good subjects everywhere. She traveled to Beaufort, N.C. and Beaufort, S.C. as well as historic Savannah, Ga. She also loves taking photos of old cars and trucks. The Hickory resident found a group of three old trucks in Boone and this yielded a striking photograph.
Suggs, 29, likes to take portraits but she's also good at nature photography. Her color image, titled "Peeling Tree," was captured on the shores of Lake Lure, which is about 20 minutes from her home in Forest City.
Ben Hollifield, 20, of Glenwood took a variety of photos in color and black-and-white as well. One of them, titled "Me and My Cat," is a humorous shot of him lying on the ground as his pet cat, grown to enormous proportions, towers overhead.
All three graduates of the two-year program said they hope that it can lead them to a career in photography.
The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of August. The majority of their photographs are for sale.
