Saturday storm update: Thousands in McDowell still without power

Thousands of people in McDowell County were still without power Saturday following one of the biggest winter storms to hit western North Carolina in years.
The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network, a national database, has two reporting stations in McDowell. One listed snowfall at 11 inches, the other at 10 inches.
At 10:09 a.m., Duke Energy reported that 1,970 customers in McDowell were without electricity.
Twenty-our N.C. National Guard soldiers were called in to assist the N.C. Highway Patrol to rescue stranded motorists, the National Guard said Saturday morning.
Using Humvees, the Guardsmen were working out of the armories in Marion and Hendersonville.
