'Our State': Orchard vacation has a-peel

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

A McDowell County landmark is one our "Our State" magazine's vacation destinations for 2010.
The January issue, themed "The Year of the North Carolina Vacation," lists "twelve ideas, month by month, for rediscovering the Old North State."
The Orchard at Altapass is named the destination of choice for September. In a profile by writer Jess Clarke and photographer Matt Rose, the orchard is described as a place where "mountain heritage is preserved through music, dance, storytelling, and crafts."
Clarke traces the orchard's history and its transformation thanks to Bill Carson and wife Judy and Carson's sister, Kit Trubey, who took over operation in 1995, turning it into a nonprofit that aims to educate and entertain.
Among the other 11 recommendations from the magazine are the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the Biltmore Estate and the new N.C. Museum of Art.
Our State, a monthly publication focusing on North Carolina, is available at newsstands and by subscription. For more information, go online at ourstate.com or call (800) 948-1409.
Side note: The January issue also features a letter to the editor from Marion's Frank Dean on a November article about the Honor Air program, which sends World War II veterans on trips to Washington, D.C.
