The athletic director's position at McDowell High School may be filled at the Board of Education's July meeting.
Principal Ben Talbert said that Brian Franklin's resignation was a loss but Franklin's decision was understandable.
"He's still here," said Talbert, "still coaching, still teaching, still being a dad. It's a lot to do already, and the AD job is a lot of work and a lot of responsibility."
Talbert said he had made a recommendation to fill the post, and that it would be considered by the board at their next meeting.
Athletic director is not a stand-alone job, the principal added. It is an additional job that can be added to the responsibilities of McDowell High School staff. Therefore, only MHS staff are eligible for consideration.
He would not say whom he had recommended recommendation for the job, but said Franklin's would be a tough act to follow.
"He has done great at it for two years," he said. "He's done a lot of good things for our program, and he's still a great coach and a great teacher."
Franklin could not be reached for comment on Thursday.
