A Nebo businessman charged last month with a felony after authorities say he failed to reimburse one of his vendors has admitted his guilt to a lesser charge.
Larry William Birchfield, 52, of Muddy Creek Road recently pleaded guilty in McDowell County District Court to writing a simple worthless check. Judge Randy Pool ordered him to pay court costs and restitution of $5,025 to the victim in the case.
Capt. Vic Hollifield of the McDowell County Sheriff's Office originally charged Birchfield with felony obtaining property by false pretense. Prosecutors allowed him to plead to a lesser offense.
Birchfield owns Birchfield Log Home Corp. in Nebo.
Hollifield stated in a previous interview that Terry Lynn Bond, who operates C&B Lumber of Fries, Va., reported that his company delivered a $5,000 load of building lumber to Birchfield's business earlier this year. The check Birchfield gave C&B was sent through the bank twice and bounced both times, according to Hollifield.
The captain said Bond called Birchfield several times about reimbursement, but Birchfield never responded.
Birchfield previously stated that he had suffered financial difficulties because the state Department of Revenue took thousands of dollars from his bank account for taxes he owed.
