A Nebo woman is used to fighting fires but maybe not one quite like this.
She dedicated herself to serving and protecting her community, but now authorities have arrested her for stealing more than $16,000 from a local nonprofit firefighters group.
Detective Kevin Fineberg of the McDowell County Sheriff's Office charged Julie Augustine Mace, 31, of Chestnut Oak Forest Drive with one felony count of embezzlement.
A grand jury also indicted her on the charge earlier this month. A grand jury meets behind closed doors to consider if enough evidence is present for a case to be heard in Superior Court.
Fineberg stated that, between July 2008 and March 2009, Mace stole $16,492.64 from the McDowell Fire Association.
He's been investigating the case since March 20, when association members noticed a large amount of money missing. Mace was the treasurer of the group and a volunteer firefighter.
"She was writing checks to herself for personal use," said the detective. "She also got a debit card for the association, which she was not authorized to do. None of the board members knew the card existed. She used it and withdrew cash for personal items."
Fineberg added that an audit was conducted to determine the exact dollar amount Mace is accused of taking from the association.
