Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton will tour McDowell Technical Community College today and hear a report on the programs offered there.
Dalton, a Democrat from Rutherfordton who was elected last year to the office of lieutenant governor, will tour the college at 1 p.m. He will receive an update on campus activities and programs prior to the tour.
Dalton, who sits on both the State Board of Education and the N.C. Board of Community Colleges, was the principal sponsor of the 2003 Innovative Education Initiatives Act when he was a member of the N.C. Senate. He now serves as chairman of the recently established Joining Our Businesses and Schools Commission (JOBS), which will seek to link curricula at early college high schools to regional economies across North Carolina and to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education in the public schools.
Early college high schools partner with community colleges to help students accelerate their education and receive up to two years of college transfer credit or a technical degree without paying tuition.
