Marion dentist Dr. James Gaskill was honored last week by Gov. Bev Purdue for his years of volunteer service to needy children and elderly in McDowell County.
Gaskill was given the Governor's Medallion Award at a special volunteer awards ceremony held Monday, Nov. 2 at the State Capitol building in Raleigh. Out of hundreds of potential recipients, Gaskill was one of only 20 selected in the state to receive this prestigious honor.
A formal reception followed the ceremony at the governor's Executive Mansion.
Gaskill was chosen for this award because of his years of providing dental care for McDowell's children and elderly in need.
"I would like to thank the committee here in McDowell County who nominated me," he said.
Gaskill has volunteered his dental care services to The McDowell Hospital, Head Start, the Department of Social Services, Southmountain Children's Home and the Partnership for Children for 30 years, donating his time each week. He also volunteers his dental services for senior citizens living at places like Cedarbrook Residential Center and Sunrise Rehab & Care.
Gaskill, whose office is located on Morgan Street, said he could not do it alone.
"It's a team effort to provide care for children and elderly," he said.
Gaskill was one of five volunteers from western North Carolina who received the N.C. Medallion for Outstanding Volunteer Service, awarded by the N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service. These outstanding honorees provided valuable services to their communities, including medical assistance, help for children and care for older adults.
"These volunteers deserve our congratulations for serving their communities," said Perdue. "We should be especially grateful because when times are tough, volunteers are even more important to those in need."
The recognition is part of the N.C. Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service program, which honors individuals, groups, teams and businesses that make significant contributions to their communities through volunteer service. Since the program began in 1978, about 16,000 individuals have been recognized for their service. County coordinators and local selection committees receive and evaluate the nominations. Medallion recipients are nominated at the county level then evaluated by a panel of community service leaders from across the state.
The following are this year's recipients: Beaufort County, John Morgan; Buncombe County, Madeline Pflaumbaum; Carteret County, Richard Eisemann; Cumberland County, Great Oak Youth Development Centers; Gates County, Dillon Kyle Chappell; Granville County, Betty Lynne Currin; Guilford County, LaToya Marsh; Harnett County, Joyce Rosser; Madison County, A.C. and Susie Honeycutt; McDowell County, Dr. James Gaskill; Mitchell County, Frances Herrell; New Hanover County, Donna Sweetman; Onslow County, William Sidberry; Pasquotank County, Sonja Hibbard; Perquimans County, Rosemary Smith; Polk County, William Wuehrmann; Rowan County, Pete Teague; Tyrrell County, Andrew Swain; Wake County, Peter Zierz; and Wayne County, the Parrish family.
The N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, a federal- and state-funded agency housed in the Governor's Office, administers funding to 14 N.C. AmeriCorps programs for the 2009-2010 program year.
