I found Mike Ornberg's expression of frustration with the city government and Jim Brady's opinions on how City Council operates interesting.
I moved to this area four years ago, and at that time, a downtown revitalization planning committee was being formed. There seemed to be some excitement about potential, and I have read the paper ever since, looking for some report on progress.
The only item I recall reading about was the possibility of changing the parking on Main Street.
As I visit many small towns in WNC, I wonder why Marion lags behind.
Other towns are marked by attractive city banners at the entrance to and throughout the downtown area. Often, I have seen the sides of large old brick buildings painted with attractive landscapes. These are fairly inexpensive ways to add some charm.
Also, many small WNC towns have found a way to attract an increasing number of interesting small businesses. And while I'm mentioning ways to make Marion more attractive, it has always puzzled me why new businesses open up without removing the old business sign. It just seems sloppy.
I agree with Mike Ornberg and others who seek to improve Marion with a long-term master plan.
I'd love to hear from people who have worked on plans that have been given to the city. Is it true that they have been ignored? Can our Ctiy Council give The McDowell News an update on progress?
